Bayley-Burke's JUST ONE SPARK is a steamy, romantic contemporary that had complex characters and lots of subplots going on. There was a darkness at times that drew Mason's concern but not Hannah's who was directly in the crosshairs. Hannah always wore a tough girl exterior due to her family's influence and sometimes lack of caring and it made her needy in her relationship with Mason. She didn't believe she could be loved and understood so quickly over and over again by a total stranger when in her almost thirty years her family still didn't get her and wanted her to be something she wasn't. Mason, a firefighter, came from a more caring family but had his own issues with them. Hannah was a store executive that always put work first. Watching them get to know each other, become a couple and feel comfortable together when one was always pulling back was tough to swallow at times. Hannah didn't like talking things through and tended to say the wrong thing at the wrong time which would get those around her upset. When called on it by Mason she didn't always want to talk things over and felt actions spoke louder than words. Derek, Mason's brother, and Kate, Hannah's best friend and roommate, made a cute couple and worked fast! I didn't like her brother-in-law Troy - there was something creepy about him at times and don't get me started with Marty, her ex and Gary, whom she worked with. There were several happily ever afters in the story but Hannah and Mason's was the best and I'm so glad she finally realized what she had! There was some closure but an epilogue would have been the icing on the cake.
Bayley-Burke is a new to me author and I look forward to reading some of her other contemporary romances but hope for better closure. I also hope there's another book in the series soon.
