Sarah Moon feels she is finally getting her life back on track. After dealing with her husband Jack’s scary bout with cancer, she is now trying to fulfill her dream of having a baby. The only thing is this must be accomplished by artificial insemination due to the after effects of Jack’s treatment.

Sarah is a cartoonist whose strip often reflects her real life through cartoon character Shirl. Thanks to this alter ego, Sarah is able to deal with the frustration of repeated insemination attempts. But how will Shirl deal with Jack’s infidelity after Sarah literally catches him “in the act”? Sarah’s reaction is to head out of Chicago and leave Jack and his wealthy family behind.

Sarah has not been home very often since she left the small Northern Californian town where she grew up. High school was painful with no true friends and only her early cartoons to keep her going. She runs into one of the subjects of her early satiric cartoons, Will Bonner, soon after she arrives home. He was popular in high school and had never noticed Sarah. He notices her now as she faints. He is used to dealing people in trouble in his career as a fireman.

Sarah is not ready for a rebound romance, especially after she discovers she is finally pregnant with twins by her soon to be ex-husband. Will has his own baggage to deal with in the form of raising a teenage step-daughter on his own. Can love blossom in the midst of chaos?

Sarah is a heroine to be admired. She is the victim of every married woman’s worst nightmare, but she does not wallow in her dismal situation. Her husband, Jack, may be the bad guy of this tale, but the author allows us to see how his background has affected his poor choices.

Will is a perfect hero. Not only is he handsome and charming, but he is a “rescuer” in both his career and private life. He is a man who is able to offer unconditional love, which is truly rare.

In JUST BREATHE, Ms. Wiggs takes readers on a heartwarming journey of second chances at life and love. I am embarrassed to say this is my first novel by this marvelous author. I am thankful I had the chance to review this delightful book and will add her to my must- read writers in the future.
