Laura Hayes has just moved to the small town of Serenity. She is an actress who is working on a film. She would like to purchase a cradle for her sister who is expecting a baby soon. When she ends up at Jacob Hostetler’s workshop she falls in love with his work. She would like for him to build a cradle for her, but at first he is reluctant to do so. After a little bit of coaxing, Jacob finally agrees to build the cradle.
While Laura is at the workshop she meets Jacob’s son Daniel. Daniel is fascinated by Laura and the jeep that she is driving. Unbeknownst to Laura and Jacob, Daniel has climbed into Laura’s jeep and is hiding in the back. After Laura leaves, Jacob is frantic when he can’t find his son. The whole Amish community is looking for him. In the meantime, Laura is shocked to find Daniel sleeping in the back of her jeep. Without a way to contact Jacob, she drives Daniel back to the Amish community. As a way to thank Laura for bringing Daniel home she is invited to join the family for dinner.
Jacob is a widower and a single father raising his son on his own. When Laura buys a house she hires Jacob to put new cabinets in her kitchen. While Jacob is attracted to Laura he is not able to act on his feelings because of his religious beliefs. Jacob soon starts to doubt his beliefs. He will struggle to figure out what is right for his life as he slowly falls for Laura. Will this couple be able to withstand all of the road blocks that they will encounter on their way to happily-ever-after?
I really admired Laura and the courage it took for her to not give up on Jacob. Despite repeated rejection from Jacob, Laura never once waivers in her faith that she and Jacob belong together. It is her boldness that really makes the relationship come about.
I love Jacob and his commitment to his family. His strong ethics make him a very endearing character. Jacob’s high moral standards aren’t something that you see everyday. I found it quite refreshing to read about a character that is a little bit different.
TEMPTATION was a joy to read. Ms. Barrett has done an excellent job of writing an emotionally tense story of forbidden love. Your heart will go out to Laura and Jacob as they struggle with issues of trust, faith and love. You may shed a few tears along the way, but in the end you will ultimately walk away a very satisfied reader. Kudos to Ms. Barrett for writing an outstanding debut!
