Alexis Marsden grew up at the Breckinridge’s Thoroughbred race farm where her mother was the housekeeper and her father the farm manager. She and the Breckinridge’s grandsons, Brandon and Jack, had been good childhood friends, playing together when the boys visited. She’d fallen for Brandon later on and thought he had for her, until he rejected her when she’d told him she was pregnant with his child.

Now eight years later, Alex is living in a small apartment in the city, supporting her mother and son. While her job in marketing is paying most of the bills, Alex can’t provide the extra things her son should have, especially a father, and Brandon’s recent death means he will never know his real one.

Jackson Breckinridge, Brandon’s older brother, soon to be bank vice president, and Jaycee’s Man of the Year, has always been the dutiful son. He feels he needs to restore his family’s honor after his brother’s death. He seeks out Alex and proposes a marriage of convenience to her. The truth is that he has secretly been in love with Alex for years, but he reluctantly stayed out of the picture, hoping his brother would step in and do the right thing.

Thinking of her son, Alex hesitantly agrees to marry Jack on the stipulation that the marriage is to be treated as a business deal with no sex involved.  Now married and living at the family farm Jack inherited, staying together is proving more difficult emotionally than either ever dreamed. Jack longs to tell Alex the truth about his feelings and all of his reasons behind his actions, but is afraid he can never replace Brandon in her heart. Alex hasn’t desired a man since Brandon left her, too scared to share herself with anyone again, but she can’t deny the powerful pull she feels with Jack. Will they be able to put aside their fears to create a real marriage, or will those fears drive them apart?
