After ten years of marriage the last thing Joanie Showalter expects is to be taking her anniversary cruise alone. Her husband’s unexpected demand for a divorce certainly put a damper on her plans but there’s no reason to let the tickets go to waste. She spent years working to support him while he went through law school and helped him build his practice, now that he’s ‘made it’ he’s disposing of her.
Joanie’s decision to take the cruise alone is more than an act of defiance, it’s an opportunity to escape the hurt of Tommy’s betrayal. Rather than wallow in self pity, Joanie decides to enjoy her trip and one of the first thing she does is purchase a necklace with a turquoise carving. It’s just a pretty little trinket but it gives her a lighthearted joy that she hasn’t felt in a long time. Almost immediately men start clamoring for her attention, but Joanie dreams of a man who’ll sweep her off her feet and none of the would be suitors fit that bill.
The cruise ship’s first port is Seward, Alaska and Joanie is looking forward to checking out the scenery, doing a little shopping and sampling the local fare. Only that’s where everything begins to go very wrong. At a small café Joanie offends the old Inuit woman behind the counter simply by wearing the necklace she’d bought onboard the cruise ship. According to the woman, the necklace is a powerful sex charm and Joanie shouldn’t be using it to manipulate men’s minds.
Corbin Silver can’t believe it when he arrives at his family’s café only to be accosted by a teary eyed woman leaving the premises intent on throwing away her necklace because of his grandmother’s disposition. Once he lays eyes on Joanie - talisman or not - he knows that she’s too perfect for him to resist. When her ship leaves without her, Joanie is stranded in Seward and Corbin suggests she stay with him. Now they have the whole town intent on breaking the hold Joanie has on Corbin - after all, their attraction could only be attributed to her necklace, right?
Lorie O’Clare will have readers running the gauntlet of emotions with this charming tell. I alternated between sadness, laughter, anger and even a bit of jealousy while I read about Joanie’s adventures and her battles with her soon to be ex. Corbin is so downright sexy that it would be impossible to resist him. Joanie has some self esteem issues. Tommy’s lack of warmth over the years have taken their toll but Corbin’s loving nature aids in her healing process. I had to laugh out loud over Tommy’s self centered attitude and his attempts at screwing Joanie out of her due during the divorce discussions. Joanie develops a backbone that he hadn’t expected and the results are unforgettable. SURE THING is a fun book that proves that sometimes the rebound guy can turn out to be Mr. Right!
