Lili is an international movie star who seems to have it all—wealth, fame, and romance. What she doesn’t have is a mother. She was placed in foster care as an infant, and after a series of tragic events, was left to fend for herself. Her quest to find her mother has driven her life, and she finally narrows the search down to four women, all friends from a Swiss boarding school.
Lili confronts the four women with the iconic line “which one of you bitches is my mother”—one of the most memorable lines in popular fiction. None of the women is ready to open up and reveal the secret that they have been keeping for almost thirty years, so Ms. Conran takes us back to their boarding-school days and tells us their story.
Pagan was born into wealth, but becomes an alcoholic after a series of failed romances. Maxine is a French glamour-girl who gives up on love until she meets a nobleman who gives her a new lease on life. Kate is a successful journalist and war correspondent who has seen it all and then some, and Judy escaped dull suburbia and achieved her dream of becoming a successful PR maven. But which one of these successful career women is Lili’s mother—and why have they hidden this secret for so long?
LACE is full of intrigue, romance, exotic locations, and sex. The women are all glamorous, and all of them have overcome difficult circumstances to get where they are. Ms. Conran keeps the suspense going throughout the book—any of the four women could have been Lili’s mother, and the revelation of Lili’s parentage at the end of the novel is as shocking as you might expect. The journey through the women’s lives is fascinating and will keep you wondering what will happen next. The men in their lives are lusty and sensual, and the sex scenes are extremely hot.
LACE is a classic novel of wealth, seduction, and dark secrets, and despite the fact that it was written in the early 1980s, it holds up beautifully. It is a perfect beach or airplane read, and it’s also great for a long afternoon curled up on the couch. Readers who enjoy epic tales of friendship and romance owe it to themselves to read this book!
