When no need for a doctor is available at the women's prison, Pilar finds herself in a men's maximum security prison, treating every type of criminal imaginable. And then she meets
, the man responsible for murdering one of her friends, as well as seven other young women. Instead of feeling hatred towards the man, Pilar feels inexplicably drawn to him. All of her limits are about to be put to the test.
LIFE SENTENCES was a step outside of my normal reading parameter, but I can honestly say I'm glad I had the chance to read this book. It is not your typical romance, and is in fact, a far cry from it, but it is a side of humanity I'm afraid is too often explored. Although a work of fiction, the story line speaks an underlining truth and I found myself in tears several times. It is heart wrenching and frightening all at the same time. Ms. Miller's extensive explanation of the prison system brought this story to life and I thank her for writing such a touching story on so many levels.
