Detective James Shea is a homicide detective in Seattle, Washington. He has worked hard to achieve professional distance from the horrible things he sees everyday. However, there is something about his most recent case that has really worked its way under Jim’s skin. He has given the case everything he has but when all his hard work ends in the acquittal of the suspect, Jim is almost as devastated as Carmen Kelly’s parents. Tragically, the stress proves to be too much for Mrs. Kelly and she suffers a heart attack leaving poor Mr. Kelly all alone.

Six months later, Jim still feels responsible for the outcome of the trial and he and Ed Kelly have formed a strong connection through their shared experience. They have become family. Jim is extremely protective of Ed and the memory of his wife and daughter. When a Hollywood screen writer and a famous actress come to request permission to make a movie of Ed’s story Jim is understandably wary. He can’t deny he finds Griffin Drake very attractive but he is determined to watch him very carefully, he will not allow anyone to hurt Ed again no matter how kind they may seem.

I really enjoyed reading LOVE & LOYALTY by Tere Michaels. This is an extremely moving story. Jim’s intense and heartfelt reaction to Carmen Kelly’s horrific story and the acquittal of the man who murdered her grabbed my attention right away. I sympathized with Jim and Ed Kelly a great deal and I found Jim’s determination to help his friend very commendable.

Griffin is also very intriguing. I didn’t know what to think of him at first but as the story progressed I grew to like him very much. I empathized with his situation and I was on the edge of my seat as I waited to find out if he would be able to win his professional freedom. The attraction between Jim and Griffin sizzles but they also have a deep emotional connection that rang true for me. LOVE & LOYALTY is the first novel that I have read by this author and I highly recommend it.
