Marcus is Lola’s secret fantasy man. He has a body to die for and she would love the opportunity to take it for a trial run. She has had a love/hate relationship with him since grade school. They’ve verbally sparred back and forth, and Marcus still delights in getting her dander up by calling her by her given name, Viola.
On the Fourth of July, Lola is stuck working her family’s hot dog booth. When Marcus shows up, he and Lola go into their standard flirting/sparring match, which never really gets them anywhere, but they both always seem to enjoy it. She is positive Marcus wouldn’t be interested in her; after all, he always goes for the sexy, slim, cover girl types. She intends to keep her fantasies about him purely to herself. Marcus desires Lola and their teasing is beginning to feel more like foreplay without the sex, which he intended to fix as soon as he could figure out how. It isn't until Lola’s mama drops a hint that he realizes he had a conspiring mother in his corner. Now with a little Cajun charm and a lot of luck, not to mention an interfering mama, he's determined to convince Lola that his teasing hasn't been all joking around.
LOVING LOLA is the perfect feel good story. It made me think back to my school days when I was teased by one certain boy and wonder about him. I also remembered, how much some of his teasing comments hurt. I loved that Lola was overweight but Marcus found her sexy anyway. Not every man wants a size six woman. It was wonderful the way he realized that his comments had hurt her, though, not about her body but about her clothes being too big. Lena Matthews pens a powerfully funny tale incorporating people of every color, shape, size, and background. There is a second romance blossoming in this book between Lola’s friend, Rylee and her boss, Landon, referred to as Dr. Demonic that I’d love to read more about. I have my fingers crossed for another of Ms. Matthews books on Southern Hospitality.
