Ellie 'Lemon' Manelli is the new 'It' girl of the New York restaurant scene. Her restaurant Lemon is the hottest place to eat and to be seen. To top it all off, Lemon's got a great boyfriend named Eddie who loves her and wants to marry her. Everything seems to be going great in her life, when out of the blue, she discovers she's pregnant. Suddenly, her workaholic schedule doesn't seem so appealing, and Eddie's pleas to get married sound annoying. As Lemon watches her life and body change, the pregnancy doesn't seem so scary. Lemon's excited for the new life she and Eddie have created, but when tragedy strikes, Lemon is very unprepared to deal with the emotions and feelings that result.

While LUSCIOUS LEMON may be part of the 'chick-lit' genre, it takes the entire genre and turns it up on its head in some ways. Deeper and more reflective, Lemon's story will touch the soul of each and every person who reads it. Lemon seems like she's got it all together, but it takes one small event to show her how unreal her life is. In the process, she learns about love, laughter, and how important family is. The secondary characters of the Manelli family added spice and warmth to the story, truly making Lemon a three dimensional character as she interacts with her various family members: pregnant Trina and her wacko boyfriend, her Grandmother and her Aunt Livinia who bring out the sentimental side of an otherwise pragmatic and focused character. Eddie also is a good character, a very devoted and loving boyfriend, but the focus of the story is Lemon and the struggle she endures. I was laughing, crying, and remembering my own wacky family as I read this heartfelt story about some of life's biggest changes.
