Heather has been forced into marriage with a man she despises. Roger Parnell is a selfish, devious man who effectively destroyed any hope she had for a passion-filled marriage on their wedding night. Heather’s returning to Jamaica with her new husband when she overhears him and his mistress, Kitty, plotting her demise. Heather does what any self respecting witch would do - perform a banishing spell to rid herself of the two of them.
Adam Langworth is captain of the Devil’s Horde, a pirate ship. The ship had been blown off course two days ago and the crew is getting restless. Adam has been battling fellow pirate Mose Grower’s constant attempts at undermining his authority since Mose lost his bid to command the sailing vessel. All it will take is one glimmer of weakness and there’s sure to be a mutiny.
Heather’s desire to vanquish Roger and his mistress from her life takes an unexpected turn when their ship is boarded by pirates. Heather had grown up listening to stories about pirates depredations and knows the dangers for women onboard ships attacked by pirates and disguises herself as a male. Roger is shot and killed while trying to protect his mistress from rape. Kitty dies when she charges the pirate who shot Roger and is impaled on his dagger.
Faced with certain death at being left at sea in a longboat or joining the pirate crew, Heather opts to join the pirate crew. Adam quickly realizes that there is something about the young lad that doesn't quite ring true. He soon has his suspicions confirmed when Heather is forced to confess that she is indeed a female dressed as a boy. Adam is extremely attracted to Heather but her being aboard ship is against the ship's articles which prohibit bringing a woman on board. If discovered, the punishment is marooning.
Lyndi Lamont’s MAROONED is a fast-paced short read that indulges our fantasies about being captured by a pirate. I adored Heather’s bravery in the face of her husband’s betrayal, his death, and then the dangers of being aboard a pirate ship. Adam may be a pirate but he’s still an honorable gentleman. Not once does he take advantage of Heather or her situation. Ms. Lamont pens an exciting tale that will keep you guessing until the very end.
This is one of six stories that make up Amber Quill’s new DESIRATA collection. They’re all fantasy tales that center around a series of mystical islands which only those who truly need them seem to find.
