Dana Wiley is the owner of a winery in upstate New York that has been in the Wiley family for generations. She’s had to close the winery for a season due to "sick" grapes and now needs a loan in order to reopen. She’d left her fiancé, Nick, at the altar six years ago and with sudden clarity she realizes that she’d made a big mistake when she’d fled the church.

Nick Maybe manages Murphy’s, a bar in Manhattan and lives in the apartment directly above it. He’s been working and living there for the six years since Dana left him at the altar. He’s decided it’s time to move on, so he’s agreed to take a job with Dana’s nemesis, Melanie Biggs, and plans to move to California. Because the winery is closed for the season, Dana works as a secretary at a convalescent center. Dana pretends to be a bride twice a week to boost morale among the Alzheimer’s patients. It wasn’t until she was saying the "I do’s” that she slipped and said Nick’s name. She then realized, that it was October fifteenth, exactly six years since she fled the church where she was to have been married to Nick. Already depressed, she returns home to be told that the bank had rejected her request for a loan to reopen the winery. Knowing Melanie’s interest in purchasing the winery, Dana chooses to swallow her pride and ask her mom to co-sign for a loan. Nick is preparing for his last shift at Murphy’s. He wants to spend the next five days packing and then get on a plane for California and begin a new life. Babs, Dana’s mother, however, had other plans for him. She’s gotten him involved in helping her rich friends for "donations" to various charities. This time she has a friend that needs a bird to disappear. He’s told to make it look like a robbery. He asked Babs what kind of bird it was he was picking up. All she knew was that it was a Kakapoo and originates from New Zealand. This is one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time. The dialogue among all of the characters is fast paced and hilariously funny. Babs is so outlandish that you can’t help but wonder what she’s going to do next. Dana and Nick both have regrets over their near wedding, but they are both still very much in love with each other. They are quite possibly the only normal people in the book. The bird fascinates me. I had never heard of a Kakapoo before and the way it’s described had me laughing out loud many times. Lani Diane Rich has done a beautiful job of writing a touching love story that I couldn’t put down, as well, as bringing the plight of the nearly extinct, Kakapoo to the public’s attention. I even visited the Kakapoo website just so I could see what these birds look like. MAYBE BABY is Ms. Rich’s second published book, her third, EX AND THE SINGLE GIRL, is coming out in November 2005. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Rich’s books in the future.
