Although she’s never cashed any of North’s alimony checks, Andie is reminded of him when a new check arrives at her house every month.  She is ready to marry again, start a new life with Will, and wants to cut off all ties to her former husband.  Andie is sure that if she confronts North, she will finally be able to get over her anger and resentment towards him, and start her life with Will.

But when she sees him after ten years, she is shocked by her body’s reaction; the anger she thought she was feeling in anticipation of the meeting is immediately replaced with yearning.  And when he asks her to take care of two distant cousins whose guardianship he has recently assumed, she agrees.  So much for cutting ties.

With reports from three (!) recent nannies that the house is haunted and the kids are ‘odd,’ Andie arrives at the mysterious castle nine year old Alice and Carter, twelve, call home.  She is shocked at the poor care they have been given by the housekeeper, Mrs. Crumb, and by the condition of the house.  Andie immediately takes over and, with some long-distance help from North, updates many of the rooms and tries to win the kids over – no easy task.

MAYBE THIS TIME is a terrific, super fun story!  With family secrets, a crazy housekeeper, two very odd children, and her fiance’s voice in the back of her mind telling her this is all a ploy by North to get her back, Andie has her hands full.  As the weeks go by, she slowly gains Alice’s and Carter’s trust, but nothing she says or tries can make them leave the house and move to Columbus to live with their Uncle North.  As she falls more in love with the children, she realizes that her life with North isn’t as over as she had hoped.

With her customary sassy wit and energy, Jennifer Crusie weaves a tale that is part love story, part horror novel, and part legend.  I found myself laughing out loud, and I was unable to put the book down for more than a few minutes.  These are the kinds of characters that will stay with me for a long time to come.  Jennifer Crusie’s first solo novel in six years has been long awaited and is worth every second of that wait!  Exuberant, light-hearted and touching, MAYBE THIS TIME exceeds all expectations.
