Barbara Dunlop’s captured the essence of Middle Eastern mystery in her newest release, MILLIONS TO SPARE.
Julia Nash is in Dubai as a reporter for Equine Earth Magazine. It’s a simple assignment, really. Fly in, watch her friend and article subject ride a race, submit the article, and fly back home. Simple. Or it was until she spots a horse nearly identical to one she knew back home. One that has been barred from Thoroughbred racing due to DNA results showing his sire was not the horse it was reported to be. Smelling a story, she’s off to the races quite literally.
The Right Honorable Lord Harrison William Arthur Beaumont-Rochester, Baron Welsmeire, owns Cadair Racing and lives in Dubai on a diplomat passport. To him, life is full of mindless duty such as hosting diplomatic functions and setting forth the right image. is his passion. When Julia is discovered stowed away in his horse trailer attempting to get a DNA sample from the pride of his stables, he takes her for one of two things: a spy or assassin set to infiltrate his compound just before his big diplomatic ball. When his staff has her arrested as an attempted , he finds himself in the unlikely position of rescuer as he bribes the authorities to forget it ever happened.
Sparks fly between them as they realize there is far more under the covers of horse racing. Following the traces of clues, they soon find themselves on the run from a mysterious man bent on erasing the trail as well as the authorities who have suddenly decided Julia is a person of interest. Escaping into the desert to the encampment of a loyal friend, Harrison soon realizes that there is only one way he was going to get Julia out of the country.
A Bedouin marriage later, he escorts her out of the country and sets to get on with his life. But what starts as a marriage of necessity soon becomes so much more.
MILLIONS TO SPARE is a book readers will enjoy whether they’re fans of the horse world or just a spectator. Ms. Dunlop does a wonderful job painting a backdrop that makes her characters shine.
