Now fully recovered from a horrendous accident, Angie LaCroix takes some time off to visit Virgin River for a month, despite her university professor mother’s determination to have her return to her studies in medical school right away. Before the accident, while her friends were going on dates and having fun, Angie spent her time pleasing her mama. But the accident has given her a new outlook on life and she is not even sure she wants to return to medical school. But one thing is for sure; she does not plan to waste any more time. Instead, she is determined to re-evaluate her life choices as she spends time away from her domineering mother.

Patrick ‘Paddy’ Riordan is trying to recover from losing his two best friends. First, Leigh, his girlfriend of four years, broke it off with him. Then Jake died during a mission in Afghanistan. With Paddy being the lead, he feels responsible and is experiencing survivor’s guilt. After all, Jake had a family that depended on him; a wife and son. Needing to get away, he chose to go to Virgin River because his four brothers either live there or are nearby. Staying by himself in his brother, Aidan’s, small cabin is giving him the space he needs, as he makes some decisions. Should he return to Charleston and a new mission just before Christmas, or should he return to pack his gear and out-process? He tries to stay in touch with Jake’s wife, Marie, who is now in Oklahoma. The one thing he knows for sure is that to stay in the Navy he needs a loving, devoted wife like Marie was with Jake. He envied the loving relationship they had, but that type of relationship does not seem to be in the cards for him. Now Marie remains a very good friend. Although he is not in love with her, he feels it is his obligation to make a family with Jake’s wife and son, and he plans to spend Christmas with them.

Arriving in Virgin River, Angie headed straight to her Uncle Jake’s bar, eager to be reunited with him, his wife Mel and her Aunt Brie, as well as the other friends she has made there. But while there, she meets another visitor to the area, Paddy. Despite Jack’s warnings that Paddy is not for her, she finds herself drawn to him and the feeling is mutual. However, Paddy lets her in on the fact that he plans to make a life with Jake’s widow and her son, despite the romantic interlude they are experiencing in Virgin River. But she is willing to settle for the time they have together before they have to leave Virgin River to get on with their lives. However, she finds herself falling in love with him. So, when the time to part ways arrives, will she lose the man she loves to his sense of responsibility towards the family of his deceased friend, or will they experience the magic of VIRGIN RIVER?

A wonderful romance, MY KIND OF CHRISTMAS, the twentieth book in #1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr’s VIRGIN RIVER series, is a heartwarming, passionate contemporary romance that is sure to captivate readers. Reading one of author Robyn Carr’s VIRGIN RIVER novels is like coming home after a long time away. With warmth, family and friends who know you, this series has developed quite a following, including this reviewer. Both Paddy and Angie are in Virgin River to get away from their regular life to re-evaluate what they want to do with the rest of it. What a perfect time to find each other! Meanwhile, Jack is having trouble dealing with the relationship between one of the Riordan brothers, Patrick, and his beloved niece, Angie, and must deal with not having things his way, although it is not for lack of trying. There is also the ongoing conflict between Angie and her mom, both strong-willed women. With a writing style that allows her to combine multiple storylines, well-drawn characters, realistic dialogue, family dynamics, wonderful values, life-altering events and love, Ms. Carr draws her readers right into the story, bringing it to life. Fans of this series, as usual, will be updated on some of the characters from her previous books. This beautifully written story is ideal for a cold winter’s night or any time of the year. I highly recommend it!
