Divorce Attorney Harper James has just popped the question to her long-time boyfriend, Dennis Costello, when she learns her little stepsister, Willa, is about to get married for the third time.  Willa is marrying Christopher Lowery, who happens to be the half-brother of Harper’s ex-husband, Nick.  The wedding will take place at Glacier National Park, and Nick will be there.  And it’s only two weeks away!  Luckily, Harper will have Dennis along, so things with Nick shouldn’t be too awkward.  Harper tries to ignore the fact that Dennis wasn’t exactly thrilled with her marriage proposal.

Nick Lowery and Harper James married young.  Nick talked Harper into the marriage, but she never really believed it would last.  After all, it seemed as though her parents had a great marriage and Harper’s mom was her best friend, but she simply left them one day and Harper never heard from her again.  But Nick’s enthusiasm and optimism wasn’t enough, and the marriage didn’t even last one year.  So why is it that now, twelve years later, sparks begin to fly from the moment Harper and Nick get within a few feet of each other?  When an airport glitch leaves Harper stranded alone in Montana, without a place to stay or a way back home to Martha’s Vineyard, Nick steps in and offers her a ride.  Can she handle all that time alone in a car with Nick?  Well, Harper’s stuck, so there’s really only one way to find out.

MY ONE AND ONLY is infused with the humor and fun readers expect in a novel by Kristan Higgins, but it’s not all laughs and zaniness.  Some scenes made me laugh, others made me want to cry, and still others made me cringe.  Harper and Nick are multifaceted characters with plenty of emotional layers.  Behind Harper’s brash façade is a vulnerable woman who never really recovered from her mother’s abandonment.  Until Harper comes to terms with that emotional blow, it will continue to reverberate throughout her whole life.  I hoped Harper would come to realize she is as worthy of love as anyone, and stop expecting everyone she ever cares for to leave her.  I also hoped the older, wiser Nick would better understand Harper and help her leave the past where it belongs.

An assortment of secondary characters, with their own behind-the-scenes stories, added plenty of entertainment.  And what Kristan Higgins book would be complete without a lovable dog?  Meet Coco, Harper’s semi-schizophrenic Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix.  MY ONE AND ONLY is a thoroughly enjoyable read from beginning to end.  Don’t miss it!
