The two sisters share a lot of adventures during their summers together and pledge to tell each other everything. Of course, Emily goes to an Ivy League college and Maggie to a city college, so they lose touch for four or five years. Emily has always had a crush on Maggie's older brother Ben. Emily tells Ben she will move to Nantucket to live after college but graduate school gets in the way. The girls drift apart as their adult lives take over. Ben and Emily drift apart and finally break up after a romantic weekend.
Emily meets a wealthy stockbroker and settles into a relationship while Maggie falls prey to a fast talker and has a one night stand that changes her life. Even though the women are not keeping in touch, their lives are intertwining anyway. As their lives progress and change, they inevitably come back to the place they began as sisters.
I truly enjoyed this book and went through a plethora of emotions from happy to sad to amazed and finally to tears of sadness and joy. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story about the complexities of life and the ups and downs of love and friendship. At the end I gave a sigh of relief that the world has tipped back on its axis for those two women.
