Brody Baxter is a former bodyguard to the Montgomery family who is hired to rescue Ashley Montgomery from Somali pirates, who kidnapped Ashley while on a boat trip. When Brody finds her and realizes she has been beaten severely, he decides to kidnap her and take her to Bishop, Arkansas, to keep her safe from the paparazzi so she can heal.

Ashley has had a crush on Brody since she was seventeen years old but Brody is a coldfish who doesn’t allow anyone to get close. She wants to learn more about Brody’s past so Ashley decides to get to know his brother Sean and his dad Ed. Having been a six-year-old African-American boy who is adopted by a white family, at a time when this wasn’t done, made Brody into a person who keeps to himself and doesn’t want to get close to anyone.

Sean owns the local bar and is trying to make it into a thriving business. He is happy his brother Brody is back but hates the he stays to himself and won’t let him into his life. These two brothers have a lot of old hurts to overcome to be the siblings they want to be.

Brody is afraid to get close to people because he doesn’t want to lose them like he did his adopted mom. When Ashley tries to get close, Brody drops his guard and then realizes he can’t be what she wants, so he backs off, leaves Bishop and heads back to D.C. to hide. Will he realize that what he really needs is a woman like Ashley to make him feel fulfilled or will he stay a loner?

This is a thrilling story of how the other half live and how a young woman just wants to help make things better for people who deserve it. I like Molly O’Keefe’s writing style and will be reading the next book in this series for review as well. If you enjoy small-town America and people who like to help others just for the sake of helping, you should enjoy this book and series.
