Taffeta Brown has opened a health store in Mystic Creek after being betrayed by her husband and charged with child abuse of her three-year-old daughter, Sarah, which led to her losing custody. Trying to stay under the radar, Taffeta dresses in drab, over-sized clothes with her hair in a bun. She wants to live a life that will help her get her daughter Sarah back.

Barney Sterling is the local deputy sheriff and is sent to Taffeta's apartment on a noise complaint. After seeing what she is hiding under her drab clothing, he decides he wants to get to know her better. He starts bringing coffee and sweet rolls to Taffeta's store every morning after she opens. Taffeta is afraid to let Barney get too close but realizes she is very attracted to him. Barney doesn't want a serious relationship with Taffeta but wants to be friends with her. When Taffeta asks him to supper one night and poses an interesting proposition then everything changes.

This story is one of betrayal, heartbreak and learning to trust again. The relationship that grows between Barney and Taffeta is one of trial and error that will make you laugh and cry for the atrocities of the judicial system. It brings out all of the indecencies toward children and the harm done by selfish parents.

I loved this story that makes a great book in the MYSTIC CREEK series. As in a lot of small towns, people take you under their wing when they find out your life story. Barney's family steps up to support him in his decisions and Taffeta is in awe of their kindness to her. Having grown up in foster care, family love is something she has never had. I give this novel 4 Blue Ribbons at Romance Junkies because the love that Taffeta discovers in a small town and the faith she develops from the friendship and love of Barney is a beautiful and blessed story. I believe anyone who loves a feel good story of a woman wronged and how she finds hope in a small town will be enchanted by NEW LEAF.
