The two befriend the clinics receptionist, Ian, in order to get some gossip and a look at the files, and Pauline catches the eye of the handsome Dr. Neal. While Goldie prepares to go under the knife, Pauline starts digging for evidence. She finds plenty of ‘frequent fliers’ at the clinic; patients who keep coming back for more lifts and tucks, ones that insurance seems to be paying for.
Pauline gets a pleasant surprise when the mysterious Jagger shows up at the Inn she’s staying in. He’s her fellow investigator and mentor, with a past no one talks about. He’s also saved her behind on past cases, and Pauline has a major crush on him. Goldie keeps warning her off from Jagger, but she can’t seem to follow the ‘look but don’t touch’ rule. Between Jagger in the room next door and the Inn’s resident ghost, Pauline isn’t sleeping much!
A murder rocks the community, and someone is warning Pauline to go away. Juggling her case, Goldie as a patient, the handsome doctor, Jagger, and her overbearing family puts pressure on Pauline to finish her job quickly, before someone gets the chance to finish her off!
The Pauline Sokol mysteries are a perfect blend of humor, romance, and mystery. This is the fifth book in the series, and shows Pauline finally getting the hang of her job, and learning a little more about Jagger. The secondary characters add appeal and laughs to the story, and the chemistry between Pauline and Jagger keeps you turning pages. I’m a longtime fan of this series, which keeps getting better with each book.
