No Christmas Like The Present

NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT is a take on A Christmas Carol with a messenger who comes to Lindsay's home to fill her present Christmas with a lot of holiday cheer and to get her away from her bah humbug attitude towards the season. Upon seeing him she names him Fred Holliday, Fred after the character in A Christmas Carol, her favorite movie, and the adventures and disbelief begin!

Donovan's NO CHRISTMAS LIKE THE PRESENT was slow to engage my interest due to Lindsay's lack of personality and depth and how Fred was introduced to us. So much was packed into the days that Fred was with Lindsay trying to get her to once again embrace Christmas and focus on what made her happy and to let the other things go - something that I could use help remembering at that frenetic time of year! Together they decorated a live Christmas tree as well as every inch of her apartment, made fudge, went to a Christmas fair, went ice skating and shopping, wrapped Christmas gifts, attended her company's Christmas party at the home of her bosses, a husband and wife team, who treat their employees like family, and Mass together on Christmas Eve. To re-energize Lindsey and get her in the spirit her messenger had me on Christmas overload! The attraction grows between them and I could tell they each care for the other but since Fred is only on earth to give her back her Christmas spirit and reunite her with an ex-boyfriend it's something that can't happen - even if Lindsay is fighting him every inch of the way about the ex-boyfriend. No matter how much they both try to fight their growing feelings knowing they can never be together they snatch every minute of companionship and friendship that they can. There were friends, family, co-workers, cold and snowy weather, laughter, tears, heartache, sickness, anger, hope, anxiety and contentment. There was wonderful closure especially with the short epilogue and a hoped for happily ever after that we got hints that maybe it could happen which left me smiling.

Donovan is a new to me author and I look forward to reading more of her books but hope for the characters to be more multifaceted.
