Kate is facing eviction from her office thanks to the patient who recently blew a hole in the wall, and her only option seems to be to share an office with her rather sleazy ex-boyfriend, Thad. Her secretary and best friend Mona has decided to become a nurse and is test-driving the ‘outfit’ – complete with the little white hat – around the office. Jay, her ex-husband, has agreed to go to marriage counseling, but he doesn’t seem wholly invested or even interested in saving what used to be their marriage. Her dog may be dying (or maybe she’s just stoned), and her mother and Aunt Trixie are seemingly determined to drive her mad. Add to that a firebug out to kill firefighters, including her ex-husband, and her regular assortment of dysfunctional patients, and Kate has about all she can handle.
Charlotte Hughes once again delivers hysterical, lightning fast dialogue and witty, irreverent characters that make NUTCASE the best book I have read in a while. The sexual tension between Kate and Jay continues to tease readers into wanting just a little bit more. And the interaction between Kate and her mother is truly convincing; the ‘helpful’ hints and slightly skewed suggestions reminded me of my own mother!
Way better than therapy, NUTCASE is a great tactic for readers looking to spend an hour or two on the couch improving their mental health! I couldn’t put it down and took a well deserved break from my own crazy life to enjoy Kate’s.
