Just as yoga instructor Jessalyn 'Jess' Alcott is about to leave for her trip to Montana's Whisper Creek Ranch, where she is to be a bridesmaid for her friend Hayley's wedding, she receives an ominous phone call. She hasn't heard that voice for ten years...except in her nightmares. Although she appears tranquil on the outside, inside she is still the desperate girl who grew up in a trailer park. Despite leaving Charleston for Boston and changing her name, it seems that her past has found her. Her three close friends from college, who now live in Montana, are not even privy to her true past. Instead, they only know the one she made up for them. With the dark secret she keeps hidden within herself, she is not looking for a relationship and therefore, she never goes beyond a third date. At the ranch, she will also be seeing Cole again. She hasn't seen him since Christmas time, though she did keep tabs on him by checking the ranch's website from time to time.

Although Cole Driscoll struggles to find his place on the ranch, he always seems to come in second best. But there is one thing that is even more important to him than the ranch...Jess. He sees the hurt and vulnerability in her eyes, but every time he tries to win her trust, she comes up with excuses. Will he be able to past the walls she has built up around her heart and convince her that they belong together before the time comes for her to leave the ranch again? Will confiding in her friends cost Jess their friendship? Could the arrival of threatening notes at the ranch be followed by danger, or can Jess keep her friends safe?

A swoon-worthy tale, ONCE UPON A COWBOY, the third book in author Maggie McGinnis' WHISKEY CREEK series, is a sexy, contemporary romance that you will remember long after you reach the last page. Both Jess and Cole have suffered in the past, which makes it so wonderful that they find happiness with each other. There is a definite chemistry between the two of them and I admired the loyalty and camaraderie she has with her friends.

Humor, heart, second chances, abuse, interesting characters, beautiful scenery, interesting characters, romance and true love make this emotion-packed story a winner. Not having read the previous two books in this series I can assure you that this novel can be read as a standalone. However, by the time I reached the end of the book I could not wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. But be prepared; this book will not only have you laughing out loud, it may leave you shedding a tear or two. Ms. McGinnis is a new-to-me author, but not for long.
