Victoria Forley, the 5E Head Nurse at the local hospital, had always been the good girl, right up until the night she had given her virginity to the boy she loved. Afterwards, she had gone home in tears as her boyfriend had been taken away to jail, to be charged with rape. That one night had ended up in pregnancy and her father, her only living parent, had turned his back on her. A perfectionist, Victoria feels that she has to prove to the people in town that she is still good, still worth something. That is why she spends long hours at work, trying to provide for her son, Jake, so he will not have to do without. But her long hours have caused her to be late picking up her son for daycare and now she is on probation. If she is late three more times, Jake will be kicked out of the daycare. Her need to succeed is the reason she always dresses professionally and is striving to be promoted to Director of Nurses when the present director leaves in about five years. There is a new physical therapist at the hospital, Dr. K, who is using a therapy golden retriever in an attempt at a new program to help the patients. Although she has heard good things about him, she is shocked when she meets him and discovers that Dr. K is Kyle, the father of her son, although he doesn’t know it.

Kyle, who has a Ph. D in physical therapy, had been a poor student when he was younger. But Victoria had helped him by tutoring him. He had fallen for her, but after one night together, he had been accused of rape and offered two choices; go to jail or leave town and never contact Victoria again. So he had left town and all of those people who looked down on him. However, he had not met another girl who affected him the way that Victoria did. With a chance to work with a renowned doctor at the hospital in his home town, he has returned, at least for thirty days, although he may stay there if they accept his new program. He had expected that Victoria would be a doctor now, not a nurse. But when the few people who had been his friends did not welcome him back, he was shocked and determined to get some answers to his questions.

Victoria has worked hard during the past eight years to try to provide for the two of them. There have been no men in her life and no social life. But now that Kyle is back, she begins to think that perhaps something is missing in her life…like the passion that only Kyle can stir in her. But will his presence in her life destroy her chance at the promotion that she has worked so hard for?

An intriguing read, ONCE A GOOD GIRL, the second novel in gifted author Wendy S. Marcus’ MADRIN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL series, will have you quickly turning the pages to see what is in store for Kyle, Victoria and Jake. I found it hard to put the book down and in fact, read it in one sitting. Ms. Marcus brings the characters to life right in front of your eyes as she writes about everyday people. This is the first story I have read by this talented author, but I look forward to reading more of her works. With witty repartee, second chances, teenage love, a range of emotions, claustrophobia, romance and new beginnings, this story is a feel-good story that you will want to read more than once. Although this story is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. Still, do not miss the first book in this series; WHEN ONE NIGHT ISN’T ENOUGH. I also look forward to the next book in this enticing series; THE NURSE’S NOT-SO-SECRET SCANDAL, due out in May. I highly recommend ONCE A GOOD GIRL to anyone looking for a great story!
