Amy Conrad is tired of the daily struggle for survival that has become her life. Normally levelheaded, Amy splurges and books a cruise to take her to Desirata. She has lost her job, used up the last of her savings on this vacation and can’t afford any more of her medication. She only has a few weeks left to live and she isn’t about to spend her time sitting around feeling sorry for herself or in a hospital waiting for the bitter end. She’ll console herself by finding peace and solitude on the ocean. What she believes to be her last ditch effort at enjoying what’s left of her life takes a shocking turn when she finds a golden conch that informs her "he needs you" and propels her to a private island and the man who awaits her there.
Simon Whittington has waited for eight hundred years to be reunited with his beloved Christabel. He’d brashly kidnaped her on what was to be her wedding day to the man who’d brutally raped and left his little sister to die. During the short time they spent together they’d fallen in love before her fiancé found and killed her. He’s spent centuries regretting his decisions that resulted in her death and waiting for the chance to be with her again. When she arrives on the island she doesn’t recognize him or remember their time together. Can the mysterious island be responsible for reuniting lovers who have been separated for centuries? Isolated on the small island, Amy’s illness doesn’t affect her but what would happen if she tries to leave?
Lacey Savage takes readers through a whirlwind of emotions with her newest release ONCE UPON A CONQUEST. I was quickly drawn into the storyline and adored Amy’s determination to live and die on her own terms. The explanation of Simon’s short time with Christabel is unforgettable and I was able to sympathize with him and the loneliness he’s felt over the past eight centuries. I especially enjoyed the dramatic way this story ends. Ms. Savage kept me engrossed in the story right until the last page and even then I wanted more.
This is one of six stories that make up Amber Quill’s new DESIRATA collection. They’re all fantasy tales that center around a series of mystical islands which only those who truly need them seem to find.
