Jenny Tolliver has led a charmed life. She was raised in a loving home with her father after her mother died. She went on to college, got married, and teaches middle school. It seems everything is perfect, until she catches her husband kissing another woman and discovers that he is not turned on by her “good girl” persona. Shocked, hurting, and sad, she heads home to Destiny, Ohio, for the summer to plan for a future she is unsure of. The one thing she really dreams of doing is looking into the night sky once again and enjoying the wonders of astronomy, her passion, something her husband discouraged. Only, things do not go as planned when she heads across the lake to a clearing. She runs into a man she thought long gone from Destiny: Mick Brody. And heck, not only does she run into him, she has quite the passionate encounter with him against a tree.
Mick cannot believe the bad luck he has running into nice girl Jenny Tolliver. Mick has a big secret and if Jenny finds out, he knows he is in big trouble. So, he just has to convince her not to tell her policeman father. And convince her he does, using kisses, caresses, and laughter. Under Mick’s tutelage, Jenny is anything but a good girl. But he is still hiding something from her and their illicit relationship can only go so far before Jenny gets really curious. What will she do when she finds out Mick’s secret?
Toni Blake heats up the summer months with ONE RECKLESS SUMMER. Jenny and Mick have chemistry and sparks from the very first time they meet as just teenagers. And of course, a secret love affair is always sexy and with Mick being the secret love interest, well, he’s passionate and not afraid to show it. Jenny is so used to thinking of herself as a good girl that it is difficult at first to move beyond that role. But when she starts keeping secrets from people she has known her entire her life, including the father she is very close to, well, her good girl image is going out the window fast. I also appreciated that Jenny, while not necessarily a plain old nice girl anymore, changed gradually and still retained most of the values she grew up with. She started seeing the world in more shades of gray, but she was no longer afraid to let a little wild into her life.
Mick has a huge burden on his shoulders. I will not spoil it for you, but it is painful and hard to watch him go through it, while also being some of the best scenes in the book. Mick is about as masculine a character as it is possible to be, but he has a very vulnerable side that slowly emerges throughout the story.
ONE RECKLESS SUMMER is satisfying and sexy. There is something so wonderful about seeing the stereotypical roles of “bad boy” and “good girl” coming together only to disintegrate under layers of characterization and emotion. Toni Blake blends passion and heart to create a purely enjoyable and ardent romance.
