Dakota Hendrix is not thrilled that she has to be involved in the reality TV show that has decided to film in Fool’s Gold. However, she cannot say no to the mayor and will see this job through. Compared to Finn Andersson though, Dakota sees this reality show as a walk in the park.
Finn wants to strangle the producers of the show and rescue his twenty-one-year old twin brothers, Sasha and Stephen at the same time. He is fuming mad that they dropped out of college mere months from graduation to participate in the show. Finn vows to stay in Fool’s Gold and extract his brothers as best he can, while staying close to the production company by being the personal pilot for the show. He is also learning more about feisty and upbeat Dakota, who always has a smile ready for him, even after he complains yet again about how irresponsible the twins are being.
Dakota really likes Finn and he definitely likes her back. But after the reality show is done, he is heading back to Alaska, and she is in the middle of adoption proceedings. Can there be a future for these two people who were drawn together in the unlikeliest of circumstances?
ONLY MINE is the newest Fool’s Gold story from contemporary writer Susan Mallery. While it is great if you have read the previous three Fool’s Gold titles, Susan Mallery once again sets-up this new series just right so that you can jump right in. Dakota is a great protagonist. I really liked her a lot and related to many of the issues she experienced when it came to dating and planning for her future. She has a very optimistic outlook on life, even at her lowest point, and that was refreshing to read. She was moving forward with plans for adopting a child, creating her own home, and making the most of her career, even when she was not sure where the future was leading her. Finn was a bit more irascible. I did get tired of how often he repeated his mantra of wanting to rescue his twin brothers, adults in their own right, from the reality TV program. Fortunately, Dakota proved to be a healthy distraction for him, as did the possibility of a flying venture in Fool’s Gold. I knew he was a character who truly cared for his brothers so I tried to keep that in mind when I was getting irritated with him.
ONLY MINE is a plain old pleasing contemporary romance. It has healthy romantic tension, a great family dynamic and two characters that are complex and interesting. I am already anticipating the next two stories. Susan Mallery has a spark for writing contemporary romance and it shows on every page.
