Jack’s Bar run by ex-military man Jack Sheridan is the place most of the locals of Virgin River end up at on most evenings. When Jack moved to Virgin River, he met a young man, Rick Sudder, who really impressed Jack with his maturity, honor and compassion. When Rick decided to join the Marine Corps Jack was as proud as any father and as worried. Now he also faces every father’s worst nightmare, a phone call informing him that Rick has been seriously injured and may not be coming home. Now Jack is left with the task of informing Rick’s grandmother and young girlfriend, then setting out on a trip to Germany to check on the boy that he has always considered his son.

Marine Corporal Rick Sudder is going home to Virgin River but not in a way that he ever imagined. How could this have happened to him? Hasn’t he endured enough tragedy in his young life? Rick doesn’t know if he can handle this newest road bump and he has the added problem of what to do with the love of his life, Liz. Rick knows that Liz loved him because of his strength and ability to protect her. Now that all of that has changed Rick faces one of the toughest decisions of his life; he has decided to break it off with Liz for her own good. The problem with that is that the young, obedient Liz has grown up since he has been gone and she may not meekly follow any arbitrary decisions Rick makes.

While Virgin River’s favorite son is facing his serious situation, there are others in the town that have problems of their own. The town’s newest doctor, Cameron, is trying to convince the woman carrying his twins that they have a love strong enough to overcome all the problems they face. Then there is Retired General Walt Booth who is facing a romantic crisis of his own. At his age he never thought he would find another woman that sets his heart to racing, but the beautiful movie star, Muriel St. Claire, has done just that. Now Walt has to decide if he can handle her times away making movies with all those handsome young movie stars. Dan Grady is also back in town and he is not looking for love, but a chance to start over. Can he find a place in the framework of Virgin River or will his past sins be just too much for the townsfolk to overlook?

PARADISE VALLEY by Robyn Carr is another exciting visit with all the beloved people in Virgin River. This visit had all the drama, tragedy passion and romance that I have come to expect from this excellent series. I absolutely love Rick and Liz and I cried along with them as Rick struggled with his emotions and physical problems. Everything he felt was right out in the open and I just wish I could have reached into the book to give him a hug. Liz is amazing. With all that she has gone through in her very young life, she never gave up on herself or on Rick. I was so proud of her for believing in herself and her own worth and not letting Rick’s problems set her back. All of the other stories in this book are such an added treat. I love watching everyone interact together while teasing each other, but always being there whenever they are needed. If you are already a fan of this series this is one book that you don’t want to miss. If you haven’t read any of the other books, go ahead and pick this one up. You won’t be lost, there is enough background information for you to follow along and I guarantee that once you have read this book you will start looking for all the previous stories.
