Xiang Xiang was thirteen when her father was executed and she and her mother were separated – her mother to a Buddhist nunnery and Xiang Xiang with her aunt to Peach Blossom Pavilion. Xiang Xiang settled into a life of rich food and a cultured education. Soon, she finds all this is done for a purpose – to mold her into a ming ji, a prestigious prostitute. Unable to change her destiny, Xiang Xiang follows the path laid before her.She is taught music, literature and the fine art of seducing men.

A bright spot in her world is Pearl, a ming ji, who helps her to see the beauty and fun in her life. Despite missing her mother and dead father terribly, Xiang Xiang is taken under Pearl’s wing and together they form a sisterhood bound by blood which extends beyond death. She never forgot the man who executed her father and ruined her family. Biding her time, Xiang Xiang finally has the chance to do what she has wanted to do for years. As her time comes, will she have the courage to carry out her revenge?

Mingmei Yip develops an erotic story inside pre-Communist China where being a ming ji brought status, wealth, and respect. Where women could learn to be cultured in a world not kind to women - single or married.
