Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson have an intense rivalry at their law firm. Both are outstanding associates in their fields and both are right on track to be made partner. They may snap and bicker with each other, but both are intelligent and radical opposites in terms of their beliefs. But, does that stop the simmering attraction between them? Not at all. However, eight years struggling for partner is not going to end easy.
J.D. and Payton are hired to work on a high-profile case together only to discover that this case will decide their fate in the firm. Only one will be made partner. Suddenly, their somewhat flirtatious rivalry takes on a bitter edge. Payton believes she deserves partner, while J.D. is also equally sure he has worked hard enough to be made partner. But as the case escalates, J.D. and Payton are forced to work more closely together than ever before and they start to discover something new: they really like each other. But with eight years of battles between them, and with a partnership on the line, will either of them be willing to give their feelings a chance?
Julie James is a contemporary romance writer to keep your eye on! Her writing is fluid, her characters likable and determined, and the romance is sizzling. Payton is a woman on the rise. She is intelligent, has the ability to argue her point in court even under the most unexpected of circumstances, and she is a good friend. She is also lonely but hopes the rewards for putting her social life on hold will pay off. J.D. is old school masculine: Harvard grad, a wealthy family, and every option available to him. But he has worked hard his entire career to stand on his own feet rather than using his name to succeed. He admires Payton, much as it pains him to admit it at times. Their attraction is a bit offbeat because they have years of half-hearted animosity between them. Julie James makes their progression from rivals to lovers a natural one. It is a quick transformation but considering that a partnership is on the line with a very short deadline, it is necessary to have their relationship change.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT is charming and amusing. J.D. and Payton will keep readers on their toes as they toss back verbal barbs while also falling in love. This is a solidly wonderful contemporary romance.
