Molly Boudreau had spent her entire life working towards her goal of becoming a doctor, having obtained her goal she's feeling at a loss of what to do next. A pregnant woman gives birth at her clinic, then two days later shows up at her doorstep with the request that Molly keep the baby for her for a few days, the following morning her body is discovered murdered. Molly knows the murderer was the baby's father but has no idea of the man's identity. She packs up the baby, her few possessions, takes a leave of absence from work and moves back to her hometown. All to protect baby Nicholas.

Dean Coletta is a reporter who'd been working on a story overseas when he was injured and ordered to return stateside. Upon his return he tries to call his sister only to find out that she's been listed as a missing person. Digging deeper into her disappearance he discovers that she'd apparently been in hiding, had a baby, and then been murdered. Determined to find answers to what happened to his sister, he follows Molly to her hometown.

I couldn't help but empathize with the characters. Molly gave up everything she'd worked so hard for to move back to a small town with an infant that wasn't even hers. She took on that responsibility knowing that by passing off the baby as her own, she would be looked down upon for her unmarried status. She'd made a promise, though, and intended to keep it. Dean had lost the one remaining family member that he had when his sister was killed. He wants to know why and believes that Molly has the answers. He has no idea that the baby Molly's taking care of isn't really hers. Living in a small town everybody knows everything about everyone. Secrets are hard to keep hidden and Molly's secret isn't the only one in this family.

Susan Crandall writes a heart-warming tale of friendship, family, life, and love. It's a wonderful look into small town America. I fell in love with the entire town, not just Molly and Dean, and wanted to know more about each of the people that lived there. I feared Dean would take the baby away from Molly and then I worried that he'd have her arrested once he found out her secret. The characters were all so real to me that I just wanted to give them each a hug, with the exception of a few who could use a good smack. PROMISES TO KEEP has a permanent place on my bookshelf as well as in my heart.
