A year ago, cowboy Ryan Malloy lost his wife and child to a tragic accident. Since then, his grief has consumed his life and affected his work as manager of a ranch in Montana. With his latest mishap, his boss, Caleb, is offering him one last chance by sending him to a ranch in Flagman’s Folly, New Mexico. Hopefully, this change of venue and all-encompassing job of setting up a school on the ranch for disadvantaged boys will take his mind off his troubles and give him a fresh start. But as soon as he arrives in town, he ticks off the locals when he comes close to hitting a little girl who runs out into the street and then Ryan takes his frustration out on the girl’s aunt, Lianne.

Lianne Ward has been deaf since birth, but this does not stop her from accomplishing what she sets out to do. She moves from Chicago to New Mexico when Caleb offers her a job as administrator in his new school for disadvantaged boys. Although she is a city girl, not used to ranch life, she is a quick study. However, she has yet to find a man who treats her as an equal. After her deaf niece ran out into the road after her puppy and Lianne was bawled out by the driver, the last thing she expects is to find herself sharing a house with the man. Ryan seems different from the men she has known in the past, so she never knows what to expect from him. But this does not stop them from quarreling over the new school.

As Ryan and Lianne are forced to work together to get the school up and thriving, an attraction develops between them...an attraction they find impossible to ignore. But can Lianne rely on the feelings between them, or will Ryan’s painful past destroy any future they could have together?

A heartwarming tale, RANCHER AT RISK, the latest story by gifted author Barbara White Daille, is a touching, contemporary romance that will remain with you long after the last page is read and the book is closed. The limitations experienced by the deaf are beautifully illustrated as Lianne struggles to not only cope, but exceed, in a hearing world. Ryan must cope with his own problems as he still grieves for the family he tragically lost and the heartbreaking memories. Together, these two may find a way to start anew and find the joy they are missing in life.

Brimming with grief, tragedy, disability, romance, love and fresh starts, this is a story that you do not want to miss. Ms. Daille’s novels are filled with characters who will steal your heart and loads of downhome charm. As a fan of Ms. Daille’s novels, I highly recommend this story and look forward to seeing what this amazing author comes up with next. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of RANCHER AT RISK.
