Lenita Mae Faulkner, a gynecologist/obstetrician, was raised in a poor part of a small town by her mom and a drunken father.   She has been dating Ralph for nine years and longs for a baby and marriage, but Ralph always finds a reason for putting it off. Now her mom is dying of cancer.

While visiting her mother, Lenita finds a list of rules she made when she was young - a list of rules to help her succeed in life and becoming a doctor.   Returning home, she finds that Ralph has emptied her bank account, absconded with many of her possessions and is living with another woman.   She feels her personal life is a mess, so she begins a new list of rules - one to help her succeed in her personal life.   Through her mother's illness, new relationships, breakups, and family and patient interactions, she slowly completes her list.

This charming story illustrates how Lenita grows as a person and is built around her interactions with her patients and her family .  It is a poignant story of how one woman can turn her life around and make a difference in other people's lives.

RULES FOR A PRETTY WOMAN is an engaging chicklit story.  I got caught up in it and hated to see it end.  It was interesting to see how Lenita triumphed over life's ups and downs.  The secondary characters and family dynamics enrich the story.   I recommend this book.
