Eva was raised to appreciate the sights and scents of flowers and spices while growing up with Louise, her grandmother.  She insisted that Eva call her Louise to be more informal as friends rather than relatives.  Eva thought nothing of it except that Louise would always collect any blood from cuts or scrapes that she had over the years and stores it in ice cube trays in the freezer.  When Louise dies, she bequeaths Eva her house.  When Eva returns from school she finds a trespasser, Gabriel, a young man, who thinks the house is abandoned studying inside.  He apologizes and offers to help her settle the house but what they find is a mysterious room with a note and a vial.  When she opens the vial, Eva finds her life changed forever and maybe wonders if it is all worth it.

SCENT OF DARKNESS is unlike anything I’ve ever read before.  It started out from Eva’s perspective and I felt like I was seeing into her life.  Each scene and confrontation was in front of me like a movie.  Even though I knew she and Gabriel are a better match for each other, Michael’s pull on Eva is difficult to deny.  She is still young but the power of her scent and its consequences forces her to choose who is best for her but the ending is not for the faint of heart.  SCENT OF DARKNESS is unique and makes me want to explore Ms. Berwin’s other works.
