Firefighter Alex Randall and Marine Captain Sam Blevins have been the best of friends since they met twelve weeks ago at the scene of a traffic collision. Alex feels more than friendship though and he’s decided that it’s time he clue Sam in on that simple fact.   He just prays that Sam feels the same way about him.

Alex has decided that today’s the day.   He’s finally going to risk it all and let Sam know how he really feels about him.   But first he gets the distinct pleasure of watching Sam while they participate in the Over 30 Basketball League.   Firefighters versus Marines.   Afterwards everyone will go their separate ways to shower and change before meeting up again at the Carter’s for the post season barbeque.   Sam suggests he pick Alex up rather than them taking two vehicles and Alex readily agrees.

Sam has fallen hard for Alex but he’s kept his emotions hidden well.   The strain of doing so is taking its toll and he’s ready to put it on the line and pray that his being gay and in love with Alex doesn’t destroy their friendship.   If nothing else he hopes their friendship alone will be enough to buy Alex’s silence if he doesn’t feel the same way.

While showering and ummm, relieving his tension, Sam loses control of the bar of soap and then ends up slipping on it and hitting the floor - hard - knocking himself unconscious.   Alex becomes worried when Sam doesn’t show up to pick him up.   Alex is always punctual to a fault.   After confirming that he didn’t head over to the barbeque without him, Sam heads over to Alex’s house only to find him holding a frozen bag of peas to the goose egg which attests to his injury.   Sam insists on taking Alex to the emergency room.   Alex responds ‘I’m gay.’   What could Sam possibly reply besides ‘have we been barred from medical care now?’   Right then both men become aware that not only is their friendship going to change in a huge way but they’ll have to keep their love secret because of Sam’s military career.

Out of all the stories I’ve read lately SECRET LOVERS is one that really sticks out in my mind.   Not just because of the sex or emotional impact but because I adored getting to know Alex and Sam and was even charmed by their friends.   Cassie Stevens takes readers on a fun filled romp through all the trials and tribulations of falling in love with your best friend.    Alex and Sam are perfect together.   Both are strong, capable, loving men and exactly the sort of people you’d want as friends.    At only 60 pages, this is a fairly short read but one I’m sure you’ll thoroughly enjoy.
