Celess can spot a rich man immediately, and she’s an expert at juggling multiple men without any of them realizing it. Her lovers give her extravagant gifts—clothing, houses, cars—and she expects nothing less from them. But her multiple relationships are not the only thing she’s trying to hide from her partners. She and her best friend, Tina, share a secret that could destroy the life that they’ve both built—a life that has raised them from their impoverished childhoods and kept them from suffering the same fate as their parents.
In the beginning, I thought this was going to be yet another story about two street-smart women building a life for themselves out of nothing. However, Miasha introduces a twist within the first twenty pages that actually made me gasp with surprise. I won’t ruin it for you—you’ll have to read the book—but this twist changes everything and raises the stakes for both women. They could not only lose their lifestyle if they get caught—they could lose their lives.
If you’re a fashionista, SECRET SOCIETY is the book for you. Miasha’s descriptions of the women’s outfits are so detailed that you can imagine Celess and Tina looking amazing in head-to-toe designer clothes, sipping appletinis at the hottest parties in Philly. But SECRET SOCIETY isn’t just about fashion. Miasha also delves into many of the moral issues surrounding the lifestyle that Celess and Tina embrace. They may seem to have everything on the outside, but both have strained relationships with their families, and the risk of being sexually involved with multiple men is very real. I appreciate that Miasha doesn’t sugar-coat the risks that Celess and Tina face.
This is an extremely quick read that will appeal to fans of urban fiction as well as newcomers to this fast-growing and exciting genre. SECRET SOCIETY is a great debut novel, and I look forward to reading Miasha’s next book.
