Maggie Lockwood is released from prison after one year for her actions which led to a devastating fire.  While her family is thrilled to have her back, not everyone is celebrating.  The media is camped outside her front door, and many of the locals seem to think a year’s sentence wasn’t nearly enough.

Keith Weston, Maggie’s half-brother, can’t forgive her for what happened and his resulting injuries.  And when his mother disappears, the last thing he wants seems to be his only option: to rely on Maggie and her family for support.

Maggie must sort through her never-ending feelings of guilt.  Keith has to recognize the reality that his mother may never come home and cope with the consequences of that reality.  And they both have to learn to accept and somehow nurture their tenuous, recently discovered relationship as brother and sister.

SECRETS SHE LEFT BEHIND is a beautifully written story about love and redemption, fear and forgiveness, and right and wrong.  The novel opens with Maggie’s release from prison, but the story begins years before, and the entire picture is slowly and satisfyingly drawn from beginning to end.

Lyrically written prose draws the reader into the web of secrets hidden by both the Weston and Lockwood families, seamlessly weaving together the riddles of the past with the challenges of the present.

Totally absorbing and full of twists and turns, I could not put SECRETS SHE LEFT BEHIND down.  This is the first of Diane Chamberlain’s novels I have read, but it won’t be the last.  I love when I find a new author, and I can’t wait to get hold of another by Ms. Chamberlain.
