Ex-ballerina Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Patterson has turned her back on her former life and career after learning that her aristocratic background is a lie. Rather then continue to stay in Manhattan and throw a one woman pity party, she’s traveled to Larkville, Texas where she hopes to find answers about who she really is and meet the family she didn’t know she had.
Jed Jackson might seem like just a small town sheriff but he’s a man with a past – one that haunts him still. Along with his faithful companion Deputy dog he keeps Larkville safe for its inhabitants – that includes rescuing damsels in distress from herds of steer.
Ellie has never been outside of New York before so she has no clue how to deal with the unsavory aspects of country life. She made the trip to Larkville to visit with Jess Calhoun whom she believes to be one of her relatives. The only trouble with her plan is she isn’t expected for a couple of weeks and Jess is off on her honeymoon. That puts Ellie at the tender mercy of Jed’s hospitality where she begins to relax her uptight New York demeanor and experience the pleasures to be found in merely existing. Jed thoroughly enjoys discovering this new aspect of Ellie’s personality and learning about her idiosyncrasies and vulnerabilities. At the same time Ellie’s uncovering quite a few truths about Jed and the reason he left New York to work in a small town. There’s no denying they’re extremely attracted to each other but can they find a way to put away the past and build a future together?
Nikki Logan brings the city girl to the country in this beautifully written storyline. I fell in love with this story from the moment it opened with Ellie standing on top of her car to get away from a herd of steer and my fondness only grew as the story continued. She’s so uptight and troubled that it’s wonderful to see her unwind and embrace the more basic aspects of life. Jed and Ellie have troubled pasts that deeply affect the people they are today and really influences the way they respond to each other. One of the things that really surprised me about SLOW DANCE WITH THE SHERIFF is how Ms. Logan addresses Ellie’s eating disorder and the way she feels about food as well as the effects the disease have on the body.
SNOW DANCE WITH THE SHERIFF is just one of the titles in Harlequin’s LARKVILLE LEGACY. The series links the Calhoun and Patterson families together through a letter that’s been unopened on the Calhoun ranch – until now.
