Fairly Godfrey is Georgia’s cousin, and has just lost her beloved husband to cancer. A successful design consultant, Fairly has done well for herself and lives comfortably in New York City. A refugee from Congo, who was her husband’s assistant, helps out around the house and provides friendship for Fairly, but she misses her Holt very much. Trying to fill his place with a new boyfriend, she finds he just doesn’t seem to measure up to her deceased husband.
Georgia and Fairly meet up when both go to Kentucky to visit their uncle, Geoffrey. What happens there will cause the reader to consider how choices we all make in the present can, and do, have consequences, some of which end up being extremely disastrous to our well-being and happiness.
While this book isn’t technically a ‘romance’, it is about love in its many forms wrapped into an inspirational novel. STRAIGHT UP has alternating narrators in the voice of Fairly and Georgia, and also a little girl named Clarissa who plays a minor role in the book. Readers will delve deep into Georgia and Fairly’s lives down into their most inner sanctums to discover how our choices in life take us on paths we might not wish to travel.
Lisa Samson is a fantastic painter with words and always seems to choose just the right ‘colors’ for her word pictures. I know I will never be disappointed when picking up a Lisa Samson novel. A Christy award-winning author, Ms. Samson has just added another winner to her large repertoire with STRAIGHT UP.
