Michael ‘Mustang’ Jackson lives life on his terms.  When he’s not riding bulls, he’s loving women or enjoying any number of other activities associated with the rodeo.  The last thing he anticipates is a serious injury that takes him out of the rodeo for the rest of the season, if not permanently.  With little other choice, Mustang returns home for the necessary surgery and recuperation.  A failure in his father’s eyes, Mustang finds very little to make this untimely stay enjoyable – except for the presence of a now ‘all grown up and desirable’ Sage Beckett, the little sister of his high school sweetheart.

Sage Beckett has been in love with Mustang for as long as she can remember.  As a gangly teenager, she envied her sister’s relationship with him even while she wondered what he ever saw in her self-centered sibling.  She’s followed his career and is saddened by his injury but she’s very excited over the thought of seeing him again and hopeful he’ll finally see her as the desirable woman she’s become.

Mustang is anything but enthusiastic about returning home while he recovers from his injury and the upcoming surgery.  His father’s disdainful attitude because Mustang opted not to follow the family tradition of being a prison guard bothers him more than he cares to admit.  He hopes he can find work so he can make the payments on his trailer until he can get back into competing, he just never imagined that making a living would turn out to be so complicated.  In order to make his father happy (if that’s even possible) Mustang dons the guard uniform and puts in his time at the prison but there’s a far more lucrative job opportunity which incorporates something he’s very good at – lovemaking.  It’s always been such an enjoyable pastime; he never would have imagined it could make him feel so dirty or used until he agrees to star in a few adult entertainment films.

The only positive aspect of his being unable to bull ride is the time he’s spending with Sage.  Mustang isn’t sure how to handle his relationship with Sage.  He’s incredibly attracted to her but indiscriminate sex with her is taboo and he doesn’t do long term relationships.  Somehow his feelings on that topic change as he spends more and more time getting to know Sage. Now his concern is… how will she react when she learns about his extracurricular activities?

If you’ve read UNRIDDEN, the first title in the STUDS IN SPURS series, then you’ve already been introduced to Mustang’s wild and unrepentant ways.  With BUCKED, Cat Johnson brings him back for an encore performance but with a few twists and turns and a lot of unexpected background information which makes him far more ‘human’ and likeable.  As a reader, my heart broke for him when it seemed like everything he loved and enjoyed in life was suddenly gone and yet he always seems to bounce back and find a way to live life on his terms.  The relationship he shares with Sage is so different from anything he’s engaged in before that it’s fascinating to see how his feelings and opinions on long term relationships evolve.  While Sage seems innocent and very sweet, she possesses a stubborn nature and isn’t afraid to go after exactly what she wants – and what she wants is Mustang.  BUCKED introduces all new characters you’ll fall in love with, including Sage’s Grams (who bears mentioning), and gives readers the opportunity to revisit all of the characters you know and love from UNRIDDEN.  Cat Johnson once again proves she’s an author who has staying power.  I can hardly wait to find out what her next story will involve.
