Maritime archeologist Dr. Gary Lord isn’t comfortable at his parents’ home in Yulee, Florida.  It’s not that he doesn’t love them but all comments about his lack of female company and the hints about wanting grandchildren are getting to him.  It’s no secret in the academic world that Gary is gay but in Yulee, he’s still in the closet.

Gary’s hanging out at the diner he’d often escaped to when he was troubled and since everyone in town is busy doing their last minute Christmas shopping he practically has the place to himself.  That is until Harriet MacPhearson arrives, rumor has it she’s looking for husband number three.  She’s going to be sadly disappointed in his lack of interest in her, but she might surprise him when she reveals she isn’t exactly who she appears to be either.  The biggest surprise comes when Adam Crider arrives.

Gary’s adolescent fantasies all involved Adam but admitting to such a crush would be problematic.  While Adam was Mr. Popular, football hero and Homecoming King, Gary was a nerd – interested in things most people couldn’t even begin to understand.  While they might not have had a chance back in high school, both men are all grown up and Adam has every intention of showing Gary just how badly he wants him.  In a town as small as Yulee there are very few well kept secrets but when Adam asks Gary if he’s ever ridden a cowboy… well that just makes Gary want to saddle up but dare he risk being ostracized?  Fortunately Adam’s persistent and persuasive and full intends to make Gary’s Yuletide gay.

Lena Austin’s MAKE THE YULETIDE GAY is the eighth title in the Changeling Press’s SUGARPLUM collection.  If you’ve ever lived in a small town you’ll be able to fully appreciate the difficulties people have just being themselves for fear of rejection or being misunderstood.  While this story’s primary focus is on Gary and Adam’s reunion and their finally ‘hooking up’ I found myself fascinated by Harriet and how wrong people have judged her.  In fact, I had to smile because she seems to take everyone’s opinions in stride while doing exactly what she needs to in order to build a better life for herself.  Gary and Adam make an interesting couple because they are so different.  It’s more than the jock and nerd though that sticks out in my mind though, there’s a difference in their confidence levels that I hadn’t expected that plays into their storyline so well.  MAKE THE YULETIDE GAY is a fun short story full of passion, surprises and plenty of treats to put you in the holiday spirit.
