Mae-June July Augustine hated her name, preferring to go by just plain June. Finally, after eight years of hard work, she has sold almost everything she owns, including her condo, so that she can open her new martini bar, Luquos. She will be half owner of the bar, partnering with her friend Esteban. Six weeks away from opening night, she applies for her liquor license and is turned down, until she takes care of the warrant that has been out on her for the past nine years for lewd conduct and indecent exposure. Unaware that a warrant had ever been placed on her, but aware of the incident pertaining to the warrant, she heads to her hometown. June has not returned there in nine years due to a falling out with her grandmother, Ada. After the death of her mother when June was very young, her grandmother had taken over raising her. Hoping to keep June from making the same mistakes her mother had made, Ada had been strict with her. June had fallen in love with Luke Gallagher. On the day of their graduation, he had taken her virginity and turned his back on her. Heartbroken, she had left town. Back in town again now, she figures it will only take an hour or two to settle the warrant problem. So she is very upset to discover that the most expeditious way to take care of it is to stay in her hometown with her grandmother for a month, performing community service with the charity, Helping Hands.
Luke Gallagher’s mother left him when he was twelve years old, taking his younger sister with her. Devastated, he had started acting up, but had been taken in by June’s grandmother. Although he and June had grown up under the same roof, he had more than sisterly feelings for her. But after being deserted by his mother, he was afraid to commit. He had gone into the service after high school, but ended up back in his hometown. It had taken a while to get over June. He could not believe that she was back in town now. But he knew it was only a matter of time before she left him again. Luke had had a problem in his past, but a man had given him a second chance. So he started the charity Helping Hands. The last thing he expects is to find that June is serving her community service by working for his nonprofit organization, Helping Hands.
As they work side-by-side, June begins to question the future she has planned for herself. Realizing that she has never stopped loving Luke, June hopes to break down the walls he has built around his heart and to teach him to love. Will she succeed, or is she only bound for more heartbreak? Will she return to Austin and her martini bar, or will she make a life with Luke in her hometown?
