Fool’s Gold librarian Annabelle Weiss is determined to raise money for the town bookmobile. To do so, she has the wild of idea of learning to perform the Dance of the Horse in an upcoming town parade. Unfortunately, Annabelle does not even know how to ride a horse so getting one to dance for her is going to be difficult. As long as Shane Stryker is willing to help though, she hopes she can be trained in time.

Shane is looking for love but he firmly believes that Annabelle is a bit too wild for him. His first impression of her dancing on a bar in town has stuck with him, but he is still willing to help her learn to ride a horse. Annabelle takes to horses very naturally, particularly the supposedly wild horse, Khatar. But like most everyone in town, even Khatar has fallen under Annabelle’s spell. Will Shane realize that she is very different from the woman in his past that hurt him and give their attraction a chance?

SUMMER NIGHTS is the newest book in Susan Mallery’s popular Fool’s Gold series. There are numerous reappearances from past characters so fans of the series will delight in revisiting past romances. Shane and Annabelle’s romance sometimes seems to suffer from character overload but for the most part, it proved to be a pleasant read. Annabelle in particular is a star character. She is entirely likeable and just all around genuine and nice. I did not understand why Shane was not willing to give her a chance when he knew so little about her. Fortunately, as more of Shane’s back story is uncovered, his motivations became less murky. As a librarian myself, I found Susan Mallery’s research into bookmobiles and serving rural populations spot-on so I applaud her for getting it right. Additionally, as Shane finally seems to let go of his past and move forward with Annabelle, I enjoyed their romance more. SUMMER NIGHTS is not my favorite entry in the FOOL’S GOLD series but long-time fans of the series will not be let down because as usual, Susan Mallery’s companionable writing and sweet storytelling serves the book well.
