Miriam Brenneman is a very strong believer in her life in the Amish community. Jacob, her father, and Miriam have run the farm stand together for a few years since his health declined. Miriam is having doubts about her marriage and her life, which she has been struggling with daily. Her faith in God helps her to keep going day-to-day. When her father, Jacob, dies suddenly, Miriam is not sure she can handle the stand alone.

Miriam’s sister, Sarah, comes home for her father’s funeral. Sarah went to live amongst the ‘Englisch” several years ago. Miriam had always felt betrayed that Sarah hadn’t confided in her about her decision before it was done and Sarah was gone.

Miriam has always felt that her husband, Daniel, was in love with Sarah and had only married her because Sarah had left the Amish faith. Miriam and Daniel have been married for six years and have been unable to have children so far. Miriam thinks the void in their marriage is because of this fact. Miriam is worried that with Sarah coming home, her marriage will deteriorate more.

Sarah notices that there is a strain between Miriam and herself since she has arrived home. Sarah wonders what has made Miriam so quiet and unable to talk to her. Miriam sees Sarah talking to Daniel and figures they are still in love. Miriam is trying to be at peace with that.

Miriam hires two young people to help her in the farm stand. The business seems to be doing better than before but Miriam doesn’t enjoy it like she used to. When a tragedy strikes it brings everyone closer together.

There are a lot of different characters in this book that help bring all the troubles of one young couple to light. Will Sarah and Miriam absolve their differences? Will Miriam and Daniel find the love they are wanting?

SUMMER PROMISE is the first book in the AMISH SEASONS series. I really enjoyed this book once I got into the story and figured out all the characters and their places in the story. I learned a little about the ‘Plain’ people as they call themselves and how their world differs from ours. I really liked this book and would like to read more in the series. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good, wholesome story about Amish life and their everyday problems and beliefs.
