Wes McPhee grew up in Lonesome Way with an abusive father so when he got old enough to beat up his father, he figured it was time to leave town. Wes served in the Navy SEALS and went from the service to being an agent with the DEA. Now that he has retired from the DEA, he figures it is time to visit his family in Lonesome Way. His grandmother had fallen and broke her wrist and had a concussion so Wes needed to spend time with her. Wes decided not to stay at the house where he grew up because of the bad memories so he went to see Annabelle about renting the cabin on her property. Wes remembers Annabelle from high school and all the bad rumors told about her.
Annabelle hasn't had much to do with men since she divorced her abusive husband. She just wants to raise her nieces and nephew and give dance lessons to make money. She remembers Wes from school but he is so big and strong looking it makes her sort of afraid of him. Annabelle doesn't want to rent to Wes but when he offers to fix the cabin up so she can rent it after he leaves, she changes her mind. Wes and Annabelle become friends but neither one wants a relationship. When both of their pasts come back to haunt them they step up to take care of each other.
This story is superb in every way. From the bullying of kids and how some people never grow up, to family dynamics and the way a small town comes together to look for a lost child. I would love to live in this town and be friends with these people. A dream come true for sure. I give this book 5 Blue Ribbons from Romance Junkies plus a Recommended Read. I know anyone who is looking for a story to get into will love this book.
