Derek is very nervous
because he is going out on his first date in a very long time. He used to be
morbidly obese and he has worked very hard to lose weight and get healthy.
Derek is ready to start a new chapter of his life and take a chance on finding
love if only he can find the courage to leave the house.
With a little help from
his brother, Derek is finally on his way. Derek’s date Gerry is the only man
who answered his personal ad with more than just a sleazy come on and it was
obvious to Derek that Gerry put some thought into a response. He is tired of
one-night stands and he is looking for love and a stable relationship. He is
hopeful that this date will lead to much more.
I really like Derek. He is
not the typical romance hero. It isn’t often we see a character that used to be
overweight. His insecurities and reactions seemed very genuine to me and I
found it easy to sympathize with him. Derek and Gerry are very sweet together
but their relationship is also very real. Neither of the heroes is perfect and
they do make mistakes. They both have a very down-to-earth quality that I
enjoyed. The secondary characters are also well-developed. Gerry’s mother is particularly
interesting. Her relationship with her son causes some obstacles for Gerry and
Derek’s romance which made the plot more absorbing. SWEET SURRENDER by Ashleigh
Walton is a stirring and well-written contemporary romance.
