Forty-seven-year-old Alice Marlowe is happy with her life.  She has a rewarding career as an interpreter for the hearing impaired, a good friend named Polly and a cat named Sampson to keep her company.  Alice has conversations with her twin brother Vince, who killed by a car six month earlier.

Then one night unexpectedly, Alice’s life changes forever when she is awakened by a call.  The little girl on the other end of the line is frightened and alone.  Larissa Benton’s mother has left her alone and she has no idea where she is or when she will return.

Alice goes to Larissa’s apartment to stay with the child until her mother returns.  Larissa is placed in foster care where Larissa shuts down and refuses to talk.  Alice feels a special bond to the little girl and becomes a foster parent so that she can take in Larissa.

Through sign language Alice and Larissa form an unlikely relationship.  Slowly, Larissa begins to trust Alice.

When Larissa’s mother returns to her life, Alice discovers the woman is not the monster she believed her to be.  She’s just a simple woman trying to overcome the hardships life has dealt her.  Alice must choose between her needs and what is best for Larissa.

THE SOUND OF US is a heartwarming story filled with every-day characters that will capture your heart as they pull you into their life story and maybe change your outlook on what it means to love as well.
