Sophie is intensely interested in Liam O’Neil. They have a chemistry that sparks and sizzles, they share a love of family, and they have a genuine connection growing between them. Sophie has already fallen a bit in love with Liam’s sons too. Liam’s extended family is great too. Sophie loves being with Liam but she is afraid that her feelings for him may consume her whole and may put her at risk when she fights fires. Before they quite realize what has happened, the arguments about her job and safety begin to escalate and both Liam and Sophie wonder, can they make it? Is love truly enough?
TAKING THE HEAT is perhaps one of the most realistic romances I have read in a long time. Things are definitely not sweetness and light between Sophie and Liam. They have a very hard time and there are doubts constantly between them. But there is also a very strong bond between them. Kathryn Shay does a great job of showing not only the hard truths these two are facing, but also the contentment and support they have with each other. Firefighting is not an easy job, it is not a safe job, so it would make sense that this romance focuses on the realities of that situation. Shay creates a stronger story because she does focus on the hardships. I found myself completely engrossed in this relationship, the bad, the good, and the lovely. TAKING THE HEAT pulls no punches but it also builds to a very satisfying romance with an ending that does justice to all the feelings Sophie and Liam experienced through the course of the story.
