Peter Manning is a horse whisperer. He had suffered his own series of heartbreaking events. He’d lost Tori and their unborn child to leukemia, and his brother-in-law had run off and left his six-year-old son and wife after practically bankrupting them in gambling debts. Peter had to return home from the Buddhist commune he’d found solace in after losing Tori and take over the ranch. He’d become well known for his talents as a whisperer, so receiving a phone call for help with a troublesome mare shouldn’t have come as a surprise.
Discovering the mare in question was actually a very angry young woman and not a horse at all was a bit shocking but a challenge he was up for. Kate's father, Carl Rossi had put in a call to Peter Manning as a last resort. He’d tried everything he could think of to help his Kate. She’d turned into a fiery woman with no tolerance for other people’s blunders and wasn’t afraid to tell them so. Carl just wanted his daughter to be happy, and he was praying that Peter would be just the man to "settle" Kate. Peter is stunned by the beautiful woman he’s been asked to help. Kate’s fiery spirit and verbal sparing turn him on. He sees it as her form of self-protection. While he’s willing to play the game with her, he’s determined not to fail to give her what she really needs.
Sedonia Gullone has written an extremely captivating tale in TAMING KATE. I couldn’t help but empathize with both of the characters. They’d both been through horrible events that had shaped them into the people that they are. Kate had buried her feelings deep inside herself and protected herself by lashing out at other people. Peter had found strength to get through his feelings by relying on his faith in Buddhism. I thoroughly enjoyed all the verbal sparing and stunts Kate pulled in an effort to run Peter off. They both have extremely strong personalities, but while Kate’s was more "in your face," Peter’s was calmer and depended on what was needed at the time. Kate had deep emotional scars that she’d never allowed herself to deal with. TAMING KATE is a combination of 'The Horse Whisperer' and 'Taming of the Shrew'. I loved being able to lose myself for a while in this very charming story. I got so involved in the characters lives I just couldn’t put it down. This is definitely a book I’ll read many times.
