What she doesn’t anticipate, though, is that the other wives would hate her. Despite having done nothing, she became their enemy the minute she walked through the door. Shunned by the other wives and their children, and all but confined to her room, Bolanle knows that what will save her is a child, but that is the one thing that seems beyond her reach.

The other wives want nothing of Bolanle. They’ve established a happy, manageable household without her. Most importantly, though, is that they are unwilling to share the knowledge of what it takes to survive in the household with her. Unfortunately, that unwillingness may just lead to the house’s demise.

THE SECRET LIVES OF THE FOUR WIVES is a wonderfully unique story about a time of which very little is written. Few books come along that can stand based on their plot alone. In that, the novel is more than worth a read.

Don’t be surprised, however, if you find that you cannot put the novel down. Not only is the plot engrossing, but the characters and their pain – as well as their attempts to recover their lives – are absolutely absorbing. Overall, great work Ms. Shoneyin!
